The last twelves months have seen dramatic increases in energy prices across the board. All of the big six energy suppliers increased their prices in 2017 and now British Gas are the first to increase their prices in 2018.

Due to these increases, millions of British Gas customers will see their energy bills rise by 5.5% to an average £1,161 a year. In turn, this has sparked criticism from the government and other consumer groups.

Claire Perry, Energy Minister, said: “We are disappointed by British Gas’s announcement of an unjustified price rise in its default tariff when customers are already paying more than they need to.” She reinforced that there was a need for urgent action over energy price hikes and added that the rise showed why the government was imposing a price cap.
